Your In-Home Documentary Style Minneapolis Family Photo Session Guide

Family life is beautifully unscripted—the laughter over breakfast, the blanket forts in the living room, the quiet bedtime routines. These are the moments that often pass unnoticed, yet they are the ones that matter most.

My in-home documentary family sessions are designed to preserve these everyday memories with elegance and ease. Here’s a guide to help you feel completely comfortable before your session.

What makes an in-home documentary family session different?

Unlike traditional portraits, these sessions are about authenticity, not perfection. Instead of posed smiles and matching outfits, I document the natural rhythm of your day—snuggles on the couch, baking together in the kitchen, playtime in the backyard. The result is a timeless record of your family’s story as it truly is. Do we need to plan special activities? Not at all. Some families enjoy doing a favorite activity together, but nothing elaborate is required. Everyday moments—like reading, making pancakes, or playing games—are often the most meaningful.

How long will the session take?

Most sessions last 1 – 2 hours. This gives plenty of time for natural transitions and allows everyone to feel relaxed. The experience is designed to feel like a normal day at home, with me gently documenting along the way.

What should we wear?

Choose clothing that feels comfortable and reflects your personal style. Neutral tones and soft fabrics photograph beautifully, but there’s no need to match or overthink. The goal is for your images to feel timeless and effortless.

What if my home isn’t picture perfect?

Every home has its own beauty, whether it’s light-filled or cozy and lived-in. I focus on using the best light and natural settings in your home to create elegant, meaningful images. The connection between your family is always the highlight.

Can pets be included?

Yes—pets are a beloved part of the family and add personality to your images. Their presence makes your photos even more authentic.

What if my kids are shy, wild, or not in the mood?

That’s exactly who they are in this moment—and that’s what makes the images real. There’s no pressure to sit still or smile for the camera. Whether your children are full of energy or quietly observant, I’ll adapt to their personalities and capture the beauty of it all.

How should we prepare our home?

A quick tidy of the spaces you’d like photographed is more than enough. I often work in living rooms, kitchens, and bedrooms where family life naturally unfolds. Soft, natural light is ideal, and I’ll guide you to the best spots once I arrive.

What happens after the session?

Within one week, we will meet either in your home, at my studio or over Zoom. You will view a hand-selected collection filled with images that reflect your family’s unique story. I will help you select the best way to preserve your memories—whether through fine art prints, museum-quality wall art, or a handcrafted heirloom album. These pieces are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt, held, and passed down.
