Your In-Home Minneapolis Newborn Session Guide

Welcoming a new baby is one of life’s most extraordinary seasons. Those quiet, tender, in-between moments—the first yawns, the way your baby curls into your arms, the soft chaos of siblings and pets adjusting—are the ones you’ll want to hold onto forever.

My in-home newborn sessions are designed to capture this chapter of your story with ease, beauty, and authenticity. Below you’ll find a gentle guide to help you feel completely at ease before your session.

What makes an in-home documentary session different?

Think of this as storytelling rather than portraiture. Instead of orchestrated poses and elaborate props, I document life as it unfolds—your baby in your arms, your family gathered on the couch, a quiet moment in the nursery. These are the images that will bring you back to how it felt to welcome your baby home.

Do we need the “perfect” house?

Not at all. This isn’t about perfection—it’s about meaning. Whether your home is light-filled and modern or cozy and lived-in, it’s the backdrop of your baby’s first chapter. I’ll work with the natural light and textures of your space to create images that feel elevated and timeless.

When should we schedule the session?

Most families reserve their session during pregnancy so there’s plenty of space on my calendar. Sessions typically happen within the first two to three weeks, but there’s no strict deadline. Your baby doesn’t have to be brand-new for your story to be worth capturing.

How long will the session take?

Expect about one to two hours. The pace is relaxed and baby-led—there’s time for feeding, rocking, diaper changes, and simply settling in. Nothing is rushed.

What should we wear?

Choose pieces that feel soft, comfortable, and timeless. Light neutrals, simple textures, and clothing that lets you move and snuggle easily always photograph beautifully. Most importantly – choose something that reflects you.

Can siblings and pets be included?

Absolutely—they’re part of your family’s love story. The way your toddler touches the baby’s toes or your dog curls up at your feet is all part of the memory we’re creating.

What if my baby cries or needs breaks?

That’s expected, and it’s part of the beauty of newborn life. Feeding, soothing, rocking, and yes—even fussing—make for honest, meaningful images. I’ll guide the flow of the session so you never feel pressured or hurried.

How should we prepare our home?

A quick tidy of the spaces you’d like photographed is all that’s needed. I often work in the nursery, primary bedroom, and living room. Natural light is our best friend, and I’ll help identify the most flattering spots once I arrive.

What happens after the session?

Within one week, we will meet either in your home, at my studio or over Zoom. You will view a hand-selected collection filled with images that reflect your family’s unique story. I will help you select the best way to preserve your memories—whether through fine art prints, museum-quality wall art, or a handcrafted heirloom album. These pieces are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt, held, and passed down.

Your newborn session is not about creating something that looks perfect. It’s about capturing something that already is perfect—your family, exactly as you are, in this fleeting season of life.
