Over the years as a professional newborn photographer in Plymouth, Minnesota, my style has evolved — not just in how I shoot, but in what I believe makes for meaningful, timeless images. Early in my career, I followed the trend of highly posed newborn photography: naked babies shaped into unnatural positions & balanced in buckets. And while these setups were popular and beautiful in their own way, I eventually realized… it just wasn’t me anymore.
Here are five heartfelt reasons why I chose to step away from highly posed newborn photography — and what I do instead.

1. Baby-Led Sessions Feel More Natural (and Less Stressful)
Newborns are delicate, intuitive, and unique — and no two babies are alike. Instead of trying to mold them into Pinterest-perfect poses, I now follow a baby-led approach that honors their comfort and natural movements.
When babies are allowed to stretch, curl, yawn, and move a little more freely, their personalities shine through. There’s less stress for baby and parents, and the session flows more organically.

2. I Prioritize Safety and Comfort Above All Else
Many of the intricate poses you see online require composite editing or assistance, and even with safety protocols in place, some setups can be uncomfortable for babies.
As a mom and a newborn photographer, I want every parent to feel completely at ease knowing their baby is safe, relaxed, and never pushed into unnatural positions. My minimalist, gentle approach prioritizes your baby’s wellbeing at every moment.
3. Authenticity Ages Better Than Trends
Trends in photography come and go — from elaborate props to perfectly color-matched scenes. But what always stands the test of time? Simplicity, emotion, and connection.
By focusing on clean compositions, soft light, and baby-led posing, I create images that will still look beautiful 20, 30, or 50 years from now. These are the portraits that become heirlooms.
4. The Studio Experience Is More Relaxed (and Enjoyable)
Highly posed sessions often require long hours, multiple outfit changes, and complex setups — which can be overwhelming for both parents and baby. In contrast, my sessions are designed to be calm, cozy, and low-pressure.
From the moment you arrive at my Plymouth, MN studio, you’ll find a peaceful environment where you can relax, feed your baby, and enjoy the experience without feeling like you’re on a production set.
5. Connection Over Perfection
What matters most to me is connection — the way your baby curls into your arms, the tiny details of their eyelashes, the way they stretch their fingers or smile in their sleep. These are the real moments you’ll miss one day.

By letting go of highly-posed newborn photography, I’ve created space to capture those intimate, in-between moments that are full of life and emotion. And those are the images that truly tell your baby’s story.
At Julie Ann Photography, I believe your newborn session should be gentle, meaningful, and beautifully simple.
