Tips for a successful newborn photo session
• Schedule Early
The best time for newborn photography is within the first 5–14 days after birth. Babies are still very sleepy and flexible during this window, which allows us to gently pose them in those adorable curled-up positions. It’s best to book your session during your second or third trimester to ensure availability. Your session date can be moved if baby comes early or late, but getting on my calendar ensures I save space for them for your window of time.
• Feed Before the Session
A full tummy means a happy, sleepy baby—perfect for posing! Feeding your baby right before the session starts (this can also be done as soon as you arrive at the studio) can help them settle in and stay relaxed. You’re always welcome to take breaks during the shoot if your baby needs to feed or be soothed.
• Keep Baby Comfortable
A warm, cozy environment helps keep your baby sleepy and content during the session. I’ll make sure the studio is at a comfortable temperature, but dressing your baby in loose-fitting clothes (and avoiding anything that needs to be pulled over their head) can also make transitions easier.
• Prepare for the Unexpected
Babies are unpredictable, and that’s perfectly okay! Accidents happen, crying happens, and that’s all part of the experience. I work with plenty of patience and flexibility to make sure we capture beautiful moments at your baby’s pace.
• Dress Simply (Parents & Siblings)
Neutral tones, soft fabrics, and simple patterns photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on the baby. Coordinating (but not matching) colors for family members creates a timeless, cohesive look.
• Trust the Process
With years of experience working with newborns, I’ll gently guide the session with your baby’s safety and comfort as my top priorities. Even if your little one is fussy or wide awake, we’ll still capture beautiful memories—it’s all part of the story.
Newborn photography is about more than just pictures; it’s about preserving a fleeting moment in time. With a little planning and a lot of love, your session will result in keepsake images you’ll treasure forever. If you have any questions or want to discuss what to expect, I’m always here to help!
